IRCTC’s E-Pantry Service: A New Era of Digital Convenience
Bringing hygienic, pre-booked meals to Mail & Express passengers, eliminating overcharging and uncertainty.
"Digital ko haan; Nagad ko na"
The new interface allows passengers to pre-book meals, receive a verification code (MVC), and pay digitally. No cash, no confusion.
For decades, onboard catering in India has evolved along with the Indian Railways network. While premium trains like Rajdhani offer the convenience of selecting meals during booking, a gap remained in the vast universe of Mail and Express trains. Passengers frequently faced issues such as overcharging, lack of bills, and inconsistent meal quality.
Recognizing this need for a safe and transparent solution, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched one of its most innovative digital initiatives yet—the E-Pantry Service.
The Process: Simple & Secure
The Booking
During e-ticket booking on the website or app, select 'E-Pantry'. Choose your meal from a standardized menu.
The Verification
Receive a Meal Verification Code (MVC) via SMS or email. This code is your proof of purchase.
The Delivery
On the train, share the MVC with the pantry staff. Your meal is delivered to your seat. No cash exchange required.
Transparency is Key
The philosophy behind E-Pantry is clear: convenience, clarity, and confidence. Unlike the traditional system—where passengers must rely on vendors during the journey—E-Pantry ensures that meals are standardized, fairly priced, and delivered directly by authorized staff.
"This digitally enabled solution aims to transform the onboard meal experience for millions of passengers who rely on these trains every day."
Promoting Local Cuisine
A unique value addition is the promotion of regional diversity. Under the proposed “Eat Local, Pay Digital” approach, IRCTC aims to encourage vendors to include regional delicacies.
The service has been launched on a pilot basis aboard the Vivek Express (Train No. 22503–04)—India’s longest-distance train. Initial response has been promising, with passengers appreciating the transparency.
